WELCOME & RACE INVITATION
On behalf of Golden Horseshoe Orienteering, we welcome you to the 2013 Orienteering Nationals in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Hamilton is located at the western end of Lake Ontario at the heart of southern Ontario's Golden Horseshoe region. The city can be best described as 'Industrious by Nature' as the manufacturing and steel industries of the city's east end are balanced by the west end's forests of the Dundas Valley, the Cootes Paradise wetland, and the powerful Niagara Escarpment.
This year marks the 5th time that the Orienteering Nationals have been hosted by Golden Horseshoe Orienteering in the last 40 years and the second time they will be hosted here in Hamilton. Golden Horseshoe Orienteering previously hosted Nationals in 1975 (Hamilton), 1978 (Milton), 1983 (Barrie), and 1994 (Barrie). We have great experience hosting major events as we have also hosted the 1986, 1994 and 2006 NorAms as well as the 1986 Canadian World Cup. For participants that are members of an Ontario club this event is also the 2013 Ontarios!
We have chosen exciting venues for the 2013 Orienteering Nationals. The sprint race takes place on the campus of McMaster University - site of the 2006 NorAms Sprint. McMaster University is bordered by the Royal Botanical Gargens and the mix of Gothic architecture and modern buildings will create a picturesque navigational challenge. The middle and long distance races will take place in the Dundas Valley - the same area as the 1975 Nationals. The kame and kettle topography of the Dundas Valley makes for a challenging physical and technical mix that will leave participants understanding why Hamiltonians affectionately refer to the Niagara Escarpment as 'The Mountain'.
We have been making plans to ensure that the 2013 Orienteering Nationals not only provides high-level racing but also great spectator opportunities and activities that will keep your Canadian Thanksgiving weekend fun and exciting! On Saturday we will create a festival and expo atmosphere at the race arena with the Orienteering Canada Expo and Adventure Running Kids® Fun-Zone. The Expo will include workshops, presentations, a silent auction fundraiser for the National Team and great food. When not racing, athletes and family will be also able to explore the many tourist attractions that the Hamilton and Golden Horseshoe region offers. Be sure to check out one or more of Hamilton's 100+ waterfalls and for a taste of War of 1812 history visit Ancaster's Fieldcote Museum for the 1814 Bloody Assize exhibit.
Stay tuned to this website for event information updates and additional race info. See you in October!
